Scam Targeting Seniors and the
Disabled |
In a new scam targeting seniors
and the disabled, identity
thieves are fraudulently
rerouting Social Security
benefits to their own bank
accounts and prepaid debit
cards. This has affected a few
FCNB customers.
It's pretty straightforward:
Identity thieves get their hands
on the personal information they
need, like a full name and bank
account number. Then they
contact the Social Security
Administration (or VA or others)
and request that payments be
rerouted to their own accounts.
Much later the recipient gets a
letter from Social Security
confirming that their direct
deposit information has been
changed
To protect your identity, be
wary of any calls or e-mails
from people asking for personal
information. Make sure your
home computers and laptops have
updated virus protection to
prevent someone from accessing
your personal information
through viruses or malware.
If it's been three or four days
since you were supposed to
receive your benefits payment or
you receive a letter confirming
a change to your direct deposit
information that you didn't
authorize, take action
immediately by contacting the
office from which the retirement
or disability benefits
originate.
What can you do to catch this in
a timely manner? Check your
bank statements regularly and
make sure your direct deposits
have posted. Enroll in Internet
Banking so you can check your
accounts daily and you won't
have to wait for your statement
to arrive.
You can also tell Social Security that no changes may be made to
your account unless you appear
in person with sufficient ID by
visiting
www.socialsecurity.gov/blockaccess.
The Social Security
Administration said anyone who
believes they are victims of
fraud should contact the
inspector general at
http://oig.ssa.gov/report-fraud-waste-or-abuse.

BANK ALERT: Your CARD #4137 has
been temporarily DEACTIVATED.
Please call C.U. Bank (304)
534-0311 to reactivate.
This is a text one of our
customers received on her cell
phone, and she knows of another
person who received one as well
but the card # and phone number
were different. This is not
from FCNB but is a scam -
fraudsters are trying to get
people to give up their checking
account number, PIN, or
debit/credit card number so they
can wipe out your checking or
available credit card balance.
Even though the phone number may
have a 304 area code, the
scammers could be in another
state or even in another
country.
DO NOT RESPOND TO TEXTS OF THIS
TYPE. No bank will contact you
stating that your card has been
deactivated and ask for your
card number or PIN because banks
already have this information on
file. |

Your PC and Internet Security |
| This website utilizes SSL 128-bit
encryption and high-end firewalls to
protect your account information, but the responsibility of preventing online fraud is equally shared by Internet Banking customers. Three critical PC protections are updated computer virus software, spyware protection, and a secure firewall. In a 2005 study, 81% of home PCs lacked at least one of these three critical protections.
